Major food and drink manufacturers and retailers establish new advisory board

Business,Consumer,Marketing Some of the UK's biggest food and drink manufacturers - including Unilever, Nestlé and Coca-Cola - have linked up with high street retailers to form the Retail Grocery Advisory Board, with the objectives of addressing Logistics and Logistics and Supply Chain Management efficiencies and reducing waste. Facilitated by supply chain standards organisation GS1 UK, the group also consists of such key players in the UK food and drink market as Dairy Crest, Morrison’s, Kellogg, PepsiCo and Müller UK & Ireland. The new board will seek to identify areas where companies can collaborate to take on the food sector's challenges, with the emergence of online and mobile shopping and waste production set to be other prominent points of focus. Taking on the challenges that face the retail and food industries today The advisory board has set its sights on two initial projects: digital marketing and order completion efficiency. 'Digital DNA' will examine how customer experience can be improved through the use of data, with GS1 UK declaring that the past five years had presented a £5bn opportunity to retailers prepared to improve data for product availability and sales. Meanwhile, the Perfect Order project will look into how efficiency can be maximised from order to payment. Richard Sadler, the customer director at Unilever who will co-chair the advisory board, said that the board "aims to tackle some of the UK's most challenging data quality standards issues and lead the industry in developing solutions that support the increasing demands of customers. "We'll focus on identifying the key areas that retailers and brands can work together on - such as how to accelerate change, increase sustainability, reduce waste and achieve mutual productivity." Sadler will be joined as co-chair of the advisory board by Tesco commercial director George Wright, who commented: "I look forward to working with other retailers and brands to better understand and deal with the industry-wide issues we're all facing today. "Retail today is hugely complex and competitive, but our aim is to work together to find solutions that will bring greater efficiencies to the industry and also inspire the rest of the industry to collaborate further." A key opportunity for retail... and the supply chain The launch of the Retail Grocery Advisory Board is one that excites us here at BiS Henderson and couldn't be more relevant and important to retail today, particularly in light of a new survey by market research group Gift that showed a 20-year low in retail shopper confidence in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. It is also clear to us that the mandate for change and the ambitions to find solutions to support consumer needs, as signalled by the advisory board's establishment, may create a platform for more jobs and skills in our own industry. As Supply Chain Recruitment providers we can offer our expertise in matching jobseekers in the supply chain industry with the most exciting opportunities of today. Contact our team to find out more.
